Welcome to My World: The Menopausal Hairdresser

Hi everyone, and thank you for being here! I wanted to take a moment to share my journey, my passion for hairdressing, and how it led me to become The Menopausal Hairdresser.

A hairdressing journey full of passion

My love affair with hairdressing started when I was just 13. I began by helping out at a salon after school and on weekends—washing hair, tidying up, and soaking in all the knowledge of the salon I could. I was hooked! As soon as I could leave school, I jumped into a hairdressing apprenticeship and qualified in under two years. I couldn’t wait to hit the shop floor and start building my career.

Before long, I became a salon manager, thriving in the fast-paced environment with a fully booked schedule most days. But as life often does, my priorities began to shift. Seven years later, I embraced a new chapter—one that focused on starting a family and balancing my work with motherhood.

The next step; Building a career around family

I transitioned from the hustle of salon life to self-employment, converting a cosy summer house in my garden into a private salon. This flexible arrangement allowed me to work while spending precious time with my children, who loved the interaction with clients. However, as my business grew, the demands of running a household, parenting, and working full-time became overwhelming.

To find a better balance, I scaled back and took a leap into teaching. Joining EASI Hairdressing College, I worked with students to grow their skills and confidence. Soon, I expanded into teaching both practical and theory lessons, eventually becoming an assessor and trainer. This journey was incredibly fulfilling—there’s nothing quite like seeing a student ace their final assessment, ready to follow their dreams and a column full of clients.

After around 2 years of teaching, life shifted once again. Travel, home life, and childcare needs drew me back to my business, Luxurious HB, which I’ve proudly run for 15 years.

A new perspective: Menopause and PMDD

While I was thriving professionally, I encountered a life-challenging experience when I was diagnosed with PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) I tried a few different routes and ended entering a chemical menopause as part of managing my PMDD. This transition didn’t just affect my personal life—it also changed my professional perspective.

I realised that menopause significantly impacts hair and women in many ways in their every day life, and yet these changes are often overlooked in the hairdressing world. Many women face thinning, dry or dull hair as well as loosing their hair or texture changes as part of their menopausal hair journey. They also find attending hair appointments difficult, many women face anxiety, depression and confidence issues when going through the menopause. Hairdressers are just not equipped to help give the support or solutions they need and deserve. I knew I had to address this gap.

Empowering hairdressers through education

With decades of experience as a hairdresser, teacher, and assessor—alongside my personal journey through menopause—I have created this space to educate and inspire. My mission is to empower hairdressers to better support their clients during this transformative life stage and help menopausal women feel amazing and themselves again.

Whether it’s understanding how menopause affects hair or learning how to adapt treatments and styles for clients experiencing hormonal changes, I’m here to share my knowledge. Together, we can help every woman feel confident and beautiful, no matter her age.

So, whether you’re here out of curiosity or ready to expand your skills, welcome to The Menopausal Hairdresser. Let’s make a difference together—because great hair truly knows no age.
